Deeper Dive into Weingarten
Group Classes Via Zoom

Thursday, June 6, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

This Zoom workshop will give you the chance to learn tips and practice your role when representing members called into closed-door meetings with management through interactive exercises, a video simulation, and a discussion.

Members who took a basic steward class this past year are being invited to sharpen their skills when representing co-workers in investigatory interviews during a one-and-a-half-hour Zoom discussion.

When it comes to understanding chapter, local, and national union structure, collective bargaining, and labor rights – the jargon can be confusing, not to mention all the misinformation about unions that are spread around. This Zoom workshop will give the nuts and bolts about what a union is, as well as an orientation of how unions operate and why they matter.

Winning Past Practice Grievances
In-Person

Thursday, June 13, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at SEIU Local 1021 Oakland Office, 1st Floor Conference Room - 100 Oak Street, Oakland, CA 

Stewards should be aware of past practices in their workplace so they can defend them from erosion by management. Through a group discussion and pair exercise, experienced stewards will learn the categories of past practice, the test for determining whether they are enforceable, and if so, tips for filing grievances.

Designed for new stewards, this course focuses on the rights and roles of union leaders, legal protections for stewards, problem-solving 101, and Weingarten rights.

Effective Grievance Writing

Monday, April 8, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at SEIU Local 1021 Sacramento Office, 5450 Power Inn Road, Suite F, Sacramento, CA

In this in-person class, we will identify information that should be included in a written grievance, discuss dos and don’ts for writing formal grievances, and individually practice writing. Designed for experienced stewards and/or those who have completed Intermediate or Advanced Steward classes as a pre-requisite.

Fundamentals of Costing Out – FULL
In-Person

Tuesday, March 26, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at SEIU Local 1021 Oakland Office, Willie Gholar Conference Room (First Floor) – 100 Oak Street, Oakland, CA 94607

Through a group discussion and series of exercises, members will be provided basic tools to cost out proposals and settlements and to think strategically about using that info. A calculator and willingness to do math are required.
